CVSA announces 2023 enforcement dates

The first event will be International Roadcheck, scheduled from May 16-18, 2023. This is an annual three-day event where CVSA-certified inspectors target different safety initiatives for motor carriers and driver vehicles. This event is the largest targeted enforcement program for commercial motor vehicles in the world, with roughly 15 trucks or buses are inspected every minute across North America.

Last year’s International Roadcheck event highlighted wheel ends as part of its 37-step inspection. Out of the top 10 vehicle out-of-service violations, tires ranked second and wheels came in seventh, accounting for 23% of all out-of-service vehicle violations throughout North America. In total, CVSA-certified inspectors conducted 59,026 inspections and placed 12,456 commercial motor vehicles and 3,714 commercial motor vehicle drivers out of service.

The next event is Operation Safe Driver Week, which will be held from July 9-15, 2023. This campaign is a safe-driving awareness and outreach initiative aimed at improving the driving behaviors of passenger vehicle drivers and commercial motor vehicle drivers through educational and traffic enforcement strategies and interactions with law enforcement. Data shows that traffic stops and interactions with law enforcement help reduce problematic driving behaviors. By making contact with drivers during Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement personnel aim to make our roadways safer by targeting high-risk driving behaviors.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding has played a role in more than a quarter of traffic deaths – killing nearly 100,000 people – over the past decade. In addition, a recently updated report by the American Transportation Research Institute report found that when a commercial vehicle driver receives a speeding violation, that increases their likelihood of being involved in a crash by 47%.

Last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week focused on speeding – and was the highest violation recorded for commercial motor vehicles, with more than 2,500 warnings and nearly 1,500 citations.

Lastly, CVSA announced Operation Airbrake Program from August 20-26, 2023, with another unannounced one-day brake safety enforcement initiative, which may be held at any time. During both enforcement campaigns, commercial motor vehicle inspectors conduct brake system inspections on large trucks and buses throughout North American to identify brake-system violations.

Last year’s International Roadcheck campaign showed how important brake safety is, with 4,500 or 25% of its vehicle out-of-service violations being for brakes.

Historically, available capacity decreases during inspection weeks.

For those that do operate during the time, if violations are found, the vehicle will be placed out of service, which means that vehicle cannot be operated until the identified out-of-service conditions have been corrected. Or if a driver violation is found, the driver will be placed out of service, adding days to your supply chain.
